Building Character

EMPOWERING THE TRAILBLAZERS OF TOMORROW

Our offer is designed to utilise our values of resilience, respect, caring, cooperation, aspiration & self discipline to develop young people who are respectful, creative, independent and have a social conscience.

To achieve this, we have developed a programme that gives our children opportunities to progressively gain experiences and knowledge that supports them in becoming responsible, respectful and active citizens.

We start with our values – they are at the heart of our school and are chosen to build an understanding of self, and a compassion for others.

We build knowledge and understanding through our curriculum delivery: our RPHSE curriculum covers Relationship & Health Education (as per our consultation with parents), Wellbeing and Citizenship (including Modern British Values) through weekly lessons. This is supported by visits from the Life Education Bus, Our wider curriculum subjects have links to equality and diversity, and a focus on key role models that support our children’s understanding, empathy and compassion further.

To develop our children further, in Term 6 of each academic year, children in each year group take part in visits and projects that support the gaining of very specific skill sets, so that when they complete their time in primary school, they have had built key attributes across a range of experiences.

This is carefully mapped out, to ensure our youngest children in KS1 develop respect, a local conscience, and individual skills that support them working with others, and our children in KS2 develop personal qualities that build on their KS1 learning to be enable them to become active citizens who can support and better the world around them.

We then embed and further develop this knowledge through:

  • mapped assemblies around a key area of focus
  • enrichments opportunites that are sequenced from EYFS to Y6 which enables the children to engage with their local and wider community, work with charities, build respectful relationships with others (including our termly Worldly Wise weeks, where our children learn about and celebrate protected characteristics) and further develop their cultural capital
  • our school pastoral support offer from our ELSA trained Pastoral Lead, Mrs Kendall.

In its entirety, our offer enables the children to engage with their local and wider community, work with charities, build respectful relationships with others (including our termly Worldly Wise weeks, where our children learn about and celebrate protected characteristics), and further develop their cultural capital to support them to become the trailblazers of tomorrow….

Some of the experiences that our children benefitted from in 2023/24 were:

Our Trust Parliament visit to the County Hall:

KS2 children working with the HMGCC Stem Steering Group

Year 6 trip to the University of Oxford to raise aspiration

Year 5 ‘Lessons at Number 10 ‘ where we had a full tour!

The school also offers a very diverse range of extra-curricular clubs and school ambassador groups to add further opportunity for our children to build and develop their own personal character.

As a result, our children have every opportunity to aspire without limits.
